There’s no single price for a move, because the cost depends on factors that vary widely from one household to the next. Rather than quote a number that wouldn’t mean much, here’s what actually drives the price, so you can judge whether a quote is fair.

Moving costs vary enormously with distance, volume, access, and timing, so any single number is close to meaningless without those details. The useful question isn’t ‘what does a move cost’ but ‘what makes my move cost what it does’ — because those are the same factors a good mover will walk through with you.

The Main Cost Factors

Distance. Local moves are usually billed by the hour; long-distance moves are typically billed by weight and mileage. The pricing model itself changes with distance — see Local vs Long-Distance Moves: What Changes?.

Volume and weight. More belongings mean more time, a bigger truck, and higher weight-based charges. Decluttering before a move is one of the few ways to directly lower the cost.

Access and difficulty. Stairs, long carries from truck to door, elevators, and tight parking all add labor and cost, especially on hourly moves. These ‘access’ factors are the most commonly underestimated part of a quote, as covered in Questions to Ask When Getting a Moving Quote.

Services included. Full packing, disassembly and reassembly, specialty-item handling, and materials all add to the price. A ‘labor-only’ rate and a ‘full-service’ rate are very different products.

Timing. Moving at the end of the month, on a weekend, or in peak summer typically costs more than a mid-week, off-season move. Flexibility on dates can meaningfully reduce the price.

Additional Costs to Anticipate

Beyond the base rate, ask about charges for extra flights of stairs, long carries, bulky or specialty items, packing materials, and upgraded valuation coverage. Building these into your expectations up front is the point of How Do I Estimate the Cost of a Move?.

Judging Whether a Quote Is Fair

Get at least three quotes based on a proper walkthrough, and be wary of any that comes in dramatically low — that gap usually reappears on moving day. A quote that transparently breaks down these factors is worth more than a lower one that hides them. For how to build your own estimate, continue with How Do I Estimate the Cost of a Move?; to protect the price, see Questions to Ask When Getting a Moving Quote.
